New Honorary Lady Member Iris Williams

Treorchy Male Choir has welcomed New York-based singer Iris Williams, who was born in Tonyrefail, as a choir member.

At their annual concert at the Park and Dare Theatre in October, she was stunned to be presented with Honorary Lady Membership to mark her 35-year relationship with the choir.

Iris Williams' musical journey has taken her from a children's home to an international career of great distinction.

A scholarship to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she is now a Fellow, helped launched a career that has included performances in over 19 countries.

Following the combined concert in Treorchy, choir chairman Gareth Evans surprised the singer by announcing their intention to honour her before the packed hall. Iris now joins a number of fellow celebrities to become honorary members of the choir, including Sir Tom Jones, Stuart Burrows and Max Boyce.

Iris Williams said: "This is a wonderful award and I'm deeply touched to receive Honorary Lady Membership on this unforgettable evening. It really has been the most marvellous of occasions and an honour to perform with this great choir back home in Wales."

Indeed this was a memorable evening.I hadnt seen Iris perform since 1978 so it was a fantastic experience and especially to meet her after the concert. She was as brilliant on this evening as she was 30 years ago at The Crucible in Sheffield. I sincerely hope that this performance will be repeated in the future. Truly fabulous!! Linda and Sheila (Newcastle)
